Drumline Audition Requirements

About Auditions

If you have been admitted as a new UCLA student for this coming Fall Quarter, you may audition to be in this year’s Bruin Marching Band. You may audition in person at the UCLA campus, or by sending in a audio or video recording (video is preferred). DVD is the preferred video format if you mail it in, but most people post their audition on YouTube and email us that link.

If you choose to audition in person, please email the Assistant Director, Ken Fisher at uclabruinband@gmail.com to set up an appointment. In-person auditions for the Band begin in May. Auditions will continue throughout the summer until each section is filled, so it is to your advantage to audition at your earliest convenience, or send in your tape as soon as possible. We usually try to complete auditions by early August, but later auditions may be accepted.

If you choose to make an audio or video recording, mail it to the address below or post it on YouTube and email us the link at uclabruinband@gmail.com AND gh@ucla.edu (you may want to make it “Unlisted” so the whole world doesn’t see it). Please include your name, address, phone number, UCLA ID number, and email address with your recording. Also indicate your previous marching experience or if you have never marched before. Send your audition to:

Gordon Henderson, Director
UCLA Bruin Marching Band
Schoenberg Music Building Room 2409
405 Hilgard Ave.
Los Angeles, CA 90095-1616

(310) 825-3835

Auditions for the UCLA Drumline are competitive. Positioning within the line is based on skill level. The battery size is not fixed; the number of instruments fits the number of qualified musicians.

Audition Tape Specifications

All new incoming students interested in auditioning for the Drumline must submit a video (YouTube link or DVD preferred) demonstrating their ability.

Your submission must include the following (played on your intended instrument):

  • A short demonstration of proficiency in a few standard drum rudiments
  • A short prepared piece or etude demonstrating your ability – no longer than five minutes. You can include music from your high school field show or any other performing group.

Please send in your audition recording by early August if possible. Mail your submission to:

Gordon Henderson, Director
UCLA Bruin Marching Band
Box 951616
Los Angeles, CA 90095-1616
(email YouTube links to gh@ucla.edu)

Everyone accepted into the Drumline, including returning members, will audition for a specific section (snares, tenors, basses or cymbals) during the first day of Band Camp for the Drumline on Sunday, September 11, 2016 (the full band starts on Monday, September 12th).
